Owain is an Umbraco MVP, an Umbraco certified master and works on Umbraco projects on a daily basis. When not coding, he enjoys running, spending time with his wife and building lego!
I've had the pleasure of teaming up with Chriztian at Codegarden 2019 where we presented our talk Imposters in the Cloud together. He was brilliant at calming my nervous and I will be forever grateful for him teaming up with me. What a way to start conference speaking!
How did you first hear about Umbraco CMS?
Got thrown into fixing/editing a v3 site on day one of a new job and I was pretty hooked right away...
How long have you been part of the Umbraco community and what do you like / dislike about it?
Looks like it's been about 10 years now; I've met some amazing people that continuously baffle me with their niceness, cleverness and love for Umbraco.
Have you been to Codegarden? If yes, what did you think about it, if no, is there any reason why?
Many times yes, it's definitely a personal highlight and an event I'm looking forward to every year.
How did it feel when you received the notification that you were being awarded an MVP award?
I felt very surprised and honored — all I ever wanted to do was help people use XSLT "right" :-)
Has being awarded the MVP made you look at things differently / has it changed anything in your day to day life e.g. asked to do more Umbraco talks? Asked more Umbraco questions at your workplace?
Definitely been asked to do a lot more presentations/sessions than I would otherwise have.
If you could offer a new member of the community one bit of advice, what would it be?
Get a GitHub account and start poking around the Umbraco source code and/or Documentation repo. You'll be contributing in no time!
Tell us about 1 of your most favourite things whether it's a band, a colour, a bit of software you couldn't live without, an item of clothing, a book, anything but tell us why you love it so much.
I have to tell you about CodeKit then; it handles all my pre- and post-processing (CoffeeScript, Less, HTML-templates etc.). It's a single Mac app that I trust 100% - let's just say that npm/grunt/gulp/yarn & webpack have all let me down so much it's bordering on the crazy... :)
What does a typical day look like for you during the working week?
Equal amounts of coffee, music, coding and hilarious quotes/comments
What do you do in your spare time? Hobbies?
I play a little guitar, watch way too much TV and occasionally manage to drag someone to the movies or out for a game of 8-ball (w/ "ball-in-hand" of course).
Anything else you'd like to share with the Umbraco Community?
Two great things I've read over the summer: "Every Layout" - https://every-layout.dev and "Shape Up" - https://basecamp.com/shapeup — fantastic stuff that makes you reconsider some of the things you do.
